What's Brewing? / Off brew?
« Last post by MarvinXi on September 23, 2015, 10:48:02 AM »
I know normally this is a beer focused forum but I'm just starting out and before I make the leap to my first beer batch I did an apple cider from my trees. I bottled Saturday and had about a 6oz taste while doing it.

The batch tasted fine, a bit tart maybe and sitting in around 7% alc. The next day about noon I started having food poisoning symptoms and was down and out for a couple of days.

Most of the reading I've done suggests it's unlikely that the cider was the cause but I'm a bit nervous to say the least.

General Discussion / Where can I find a natural freshwater spring?
« Last post by jamesmikes on April 23, 2015, 07:35:13 PM »
I'm new to the island and would like to use some fresh spring water straight out of the ground for my next brew.
Does anyone know where I can find a spring?

I just moved to Victoria from Vancouver and I finally have a deck I can brew on! I am in need of a single propane burner (large). Brewing 23L all grain batches and I need some heat.
Would love to borrow one or buy.

Might be a bit expensive for you guys, but figured I should spread the word anyway.

The first Brewnosers homebrew competition is happening in May, it is a BJCP certified event and is part of the Canadian Brewer of the Year circuit.

Hope to see bunch of entries from folks here, and feel free to spread the word.

Details here:
http://brewnosers.org/competition/

We are accepting registrations right now, until May 15th.

thanks for the tip, i ended up getting "the complete joy of home brewing" 4th edit. Really good read and a great starting off point. I have pushed beyond the coopers kits and i am now doing a hybrid BIAB with an LME to bump me into the SG that i want (i like stronger beers +6% range). Had alot of really good tips and instructions on mashing for a new brewer.

Hey-o guys.  Looks like we forgot to create a reminder for the event in a timely fashion, but you all know that our meetings are on the last Sunday of each month, barring any special events.

This event we'll be having John Bartle-Clar talking to us about 'Bocks'.

BrewVIC Events / January 2105

Happy Brew Year, BrewVIC. Now that the holidays are over, time to have another get together!

Come over to my new house, check out my new massive brewing space.

In addition to the regular BrewVIC meeting stuff we will be bringing back the style spotlight, with a bit more enthusiasm. The goal of this style spotlight is to designate a style that is encouraged for each meeting for anyone interested to brew and bring (of course, all homebrews of any style are welcomed at every meeting so don't worry if you didn't brew the style of the meeting). Dave J will talk briefly about English Milds with a homebrew version or two to share, and then we'll encourage anyone interested to bring their own version to the March meeting (don't worry, there will be a reminder) so we can learn from everyone's recipe and process.

See you then!

25 January at 3pm

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to a comprehensive book about brewing for the beginer. I am currently doing extract kits which don't leave alot of room to play. I want to get into a more indepth process but i am unsure as to where to start and what i need to brew. If anyone could offer a suggestion on a book that would give me a good start i would really appreciate it.
